Min Zhou, a Chinese-born American sociologist and documentary filmmaker, was born in Zhongshan, China, in 1956. She began her academic journey by obtaining her bachelor's degree in English from Sun Yat-sen University in China in 1982, where she later served as a lecturer until 1984. Zhou then pursued higher education at the State University of New York at Albany, earning both a master's degree and a PhD in sociology in 1985 and 1989, respectively. Alongside her academic pursuits, Zhou co-founded the Changjiang Times newspaper in China and established herself as an independent journalist, documentary filmmaker, and writer. Notably, her documentary film "Crossing Donner Summit" was produced during her time as a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Currently, Zhou holds the distinguished position of professor of sociology and Asian American studies at UCLA, occupying the Walter and Shirley Wang Endowed Chair in U.S.-China Relations and Communications.
